G14 - Overcoming Barriers to Insurance Coverage: A Role for Clinician Advocacy
Tuesday, May 6, 2025
11:15 AM – 12:15 PM ET
Location: 116
Individuals encountering insurance obstacles and denials rarely push back. Clinicians are also conditioned to accept "no" for an answer when it comes to mental health and substance use disorder care. And while state and federal laws and regulations increasingly require mental health care coverage, challenges remain.
Cover My Mental Health is a not-for-profit providing individuals with no-cost, actionable tools toward overcoming insurance obstacles to mental health and substance use (MH/SUD) care. The presentation will encourage patients and providers that insurance obstacles to care can be overcome.
Learning Objectives:
The audience will learn about potential actions that can be taken to push back against insurance company obstacles that are not revealed in insurance policies and may provide more timely results than formal insurance appeals.
The audience will learn about the important support available from friends or family members, from employers, and from government towards overcoming insurance obstacles.
Insurance obstacles impact patients, their families, clinicians, and supportive advocates. Each of these groups would benefit from learning about the resources of Cover My Mental Health.
The audience will learn about the importance of medical necessity letters as a resource when insurers and clinicians are not aligned as to the appropriate care for patients.
