Philadelphia has recently seen a disproportionate increase in overdose deaths within communities of color. In response, City officials formed a workgroup and determined that harm reduction resources must be distributed more equitably. A novel program was developed to conduct outreach and education in areas with the highest rates of overdose fatalities. Teams go door-to-door to distribute resources and have conversations with residents. Community partners hold trainings to provide additional awareness. This program has received positive responses from residents and national attention. This session will provide an overview of program development and implementation to encourage similar work in other jurisdictions.
Learning Objectives:
Understand key strategies used in Philadelphia’s door-to-door canvassing program designed to reduce racial disparities in fatal overdoses and reframe the narrative around harm reduction tools.
Formulate approaches to replicate the program in other jurisdictions or communities, applying lessons learned from Philadelphia’s experience.
Leverage community partnerships to increase access to and awareness of harm reduction resources in underserved communities.
