I3 - Exploring the Paradigm Shift: Seeking Power and Control Over Suicidal Thoughts
Tuesday, May 6, 2025
2:45 PM – 3:45 PM ET
Location: 104AB
There is a growing evidence base for using a harm reduction lens in suicide prevention. This requires several key paradigm shifts, including moving away from a focus on stopping suicidal thoughts and instead, supporting people to develop a greater sense of power and control over those thoughts when they arise. Participants will learn from individuals who've both struggled with suicidal thoughts themselves and supported and trained hundreds of others to better understand suicidal thoughts and provide effective support. Paradigm shifts, research findings and challenges to implementation will be discussed and personal stories will be shared.
Learning Objectives:
Participants in this session will be able to identify at least two paradigm shifts necessary to implement a harm reduction approach to suicide.
Participants in this session will be able to compare and contrast the difference between seeking to stop suicidal thoughts versus seeking to have more power and control over those thoughts.
Participants in this session will be able to identify at least two research findings that support the efficacy of harm reduction approaches to suicide prevention.
