Miracle Akortha has worked in human services for over 12 years. She started her work in New Jersey after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. She then worked as a Case Manager in the Foster Care system. Miracle then was able to marry her life partner, and because he is an Active Duty military officer, she found herself moving to a very rural Hays, Kansas. Miracle gave birth to four beautiful children, and the family moved again, landing in San Antonio, Texas. With her family being stationed at Fort Sam Houston, she started to embark on her next journey in her career and interviewed for a Peer Support Position at The Center for Health Care Services the local Mental Health Authority in San Antonio. Miracle made such an impression during her interview that she was offered the Peer Support Supervisor position. Since starting in June of 2023 at The Center for Health Care Services, Miracle has obtained her certification as a Peer Support Supervisor, her Mental Health Peer Support certification, and her Certified Family Partner certificate as well. Miracle has had the ability to support her peers during presentations at the Texas Conference for Mental Health Professionals. Miracle has been able to present and speak about the importance of peer services and how they support the clinical team in providing clinical services to the consumers of Bexar County. Miracle has been a beckon of light for change and has been able to create a team of peers and family partners that go out daily to do the work of walking alongside consumers with first-episode psychosis, mental health, or substance abuse challenges and utilizing their lived experience navigating through community systems to help consumers on their recovery journey to wellness. Miracle, as a peer supervisor and family partner supervisor, can use her professional and lived experience to help strengthen the employees she supervises and encourage the consumers she comes in contact within the community as well. Miracle has since returned to school to pursue a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Abielene Christian University to create a space where peers walk alongside the wellness/therapeutic journey in every aspect of community care.
