Dr. Lewis is a dedicated educator and academic leader serving as an Assistant Professor of Education at Chatham University, where she is committed to fostering excellence in teaching and learning. In her multifaceted role, she also serves as the Field Coordinator and Act 48 Coordinator for the Education Department, where she actively collaborates with pre-service teachers, university supervisors, and mentor teachers to cultivate effective teaching practices and enhance educational outcomes.
Dr. Lewis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Point Park University, a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary English from Chatham University, and a Master of Education in Special Education from Slippery Rock University. She earned her doctoral degree in Leadership and Administration from Point Park University, where her notable dissertation, The Lived Educational Experiences of Multiracial College Graduates Who Grew Up in Poverty, was recognized with the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators.
A Pennsylvania certified English teacher for grades 7-12 and holder of an Autism Endorsement through the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Dr. Lewis has a profound understanding of diverse learning needs. She is also a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Instructor, offering essential training for educators, family members, and community stakeholders who interact with youth, ensuring they are equipped to support mental health in educational settings.
Dr. Lewis contributes to the educational community beyond the classroom as the Secretary of the Young Scholars Western PA Charter School board and as a board member for Young Scholars Greater Allegheny. Her presentations cover a wide array of topics, including mental health, diversity, qualitative research methodologies, and the intersection of education and technology. A few highlights include sessions on Mental Health, Support Plans, and Student Teachers, Diversity Talk Series: Multiracial Experiences, and Teaching and Technology for the TikTok Generation Amid a Pandemic.
With a passion for fostering inclusive educational environments, Dr. Lewis's current interests focus on integrating Youth Mental Health First Aid and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into education. She has been instrumental in creating the SEL endorsement program at Chatham University and has actively collaborated on various grants to further develop YMHFA training initiatives, positively impacting educators and students alike.
Through her commitment to educational equity and mental health awareness, Dr. Lewis continues to inspire future educators and contribute to a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
