Certified Peer Recovery Specialist
Ohio State University/Wexner Medical Center
Reynoldsburg, Ohio
My name is Shawn ONeill, I am a father of 2 amazing children, born and raised in a supportive community, part of a loving family, and I am currently a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist at Ohio State University. Currently, I am in long-term recovery with over 3 years of sobriety from alcohol abuse. Previously in my adult life, I taught in the public school system for over 16 years as well as coached various sports at all ages and levels. Over time, the culmination of my progressive addiction to alcohol, trauma, and depression was a recipe for my inevitable journey to recovery. I felt like a prisoner in my own mind and a slave to the drink. Ultimately, this led me to a perpetual desire to not think, feel or be responsible, all funneling into consequences of their own significance. I am grateful for the lessons that I learned along the way, shifting from a teacher to a student of life-long sobriety. Now, I am fortunate to share and instill hope for others that struggle with very similar experiences as well as validate their need to feel heard and understood.
