Retired Sgt. James Kirk has been a career public safety professional. In his 25-year tenure with the Tucson Police Department, Jim served in many investigative and support supervisory assignments. For the last eight years prior to retiring from TPD Jim was assigned to the Behavioral Sciences Unit. In that role, Jim has taken leadership during multiple critical incidents involving officers and has been the actively involved in the mental health community, specifically on first responder policy and response to those experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. He was also the Southern Arizona lead for Crisis Intervention Team training.
Jim is an active instructor, consultant, and liaison within the mental health community. Jim is a Mental Health First Aid National Trainer and Subject Matter Expert for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Jim has been certified as an Adult, Youth, Teen, Public Safety, Fire/EMS, Veterans and Military Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor. He is also adjunct faculty for Pima Community College.
Jim has received multiple awards and commendations over his career with the Tucson Police Department, including the Medal of Merit, Medal of Distinguished Service, and the Chief's Citation of Excellence along with numerous commendations and awards from the mental health community. In 2006, Jim received the community's first Unsung Hero award in 2006 and again in 2009. Jim passionately volunteers on the Board of Director’s for the 911 Tower Challenge.
